Testimonials

Debasish Sengupta

As the youngest of four children, Debashis grew up in Kolkata, India in a warm and profoundly music-loving family; within an outsized aura of arts and crafts, music remained the bedrock of life in his family. Debashis grew up appreciating and embedding himself into many genres of music, including commercially popular songs representing the “golden years of Indian music.” He and his 23-month older sister Shyamali lived and breathed music, singing songs together at virtually every social gathering they found themselves in.

Throughout high school and also while in college at Jadavpur University, Debashis (known as “Deba” among his friends) was happy taking requests to sing popular commercial film songs regaling friends and family at every opportune moment while traveling and at all social gatherings.

Debashis has deep gratitude for the gift he has in retaining the quintessential elements (sur, taal, lay) of any song he is drawn to, and is remarkably adept at preserving all of their minutiae. This, he has noticed, helps him not only sing songs well, but enables him help others hone their singing skills.

Fast forward to 2023: Debashis has been living in greater Boston, Massachusetts, where he has been enjoying singing more than ever, with his singing buddies, often professionally in local establishments and events. About a year ago, as ordained by the universe, through a close singer friend (Kaizad Patel), Debashis came under the tutelage of Pandit Amit Chakraborty, the Hindustani Classical Maestro of the Patiala Gharana. Debashis feels music has been thoroughly transformative for him, the “north star” and the “raison-d-etre” in his life. This makes Debashis eager to invest just as much effort and planning in helping other aspiring singers realize their potential, while continuously sharpening himself as a singer.

Together with Pandit Chakraborty, his dear friends, Subhra Biswas and Kevin Bleau, he is blissfully immersed in Hindustani music and providing practical, focused voice culture and other aspects of singing training to aspiring singers. Debashis has had great success in motivating individuals to shed their initial performance anxiety, converting that energy into measurable musical skill development and becoming the best versions, these aspiring singers can become themselves.
